Commission in the Navy

When does one get his/her commission in the Navy? Is it after basic training or after OCS?

  1. It depends on how you got the commission.  

    OCS, after graduation

    USNA, after graduation

    LDO/CWO, get commissioned just before going to Officer Training.

    ODS (for Staff Corps Officers e.g. Medical Corps, JAG, etc) after graduation.

  3. OCS (Officer Candidate School) and Basic are pretty similar. OCS is Basic Training and officer courses for those in their last years of college. All soldiers who pass ROTC, Academy, or OCS are commissioned into thier respective areas. Officers are commissioned after thier training. NCOs are assigned to their posts right out of Basic. I personally went through OCS after my medical training and got my commission immediately.

  4. Officer candidates do not attend Boot camp.  they are commissioned one of three ways:

    NROTC( this includes STA-21  candidates)

    OCS

    USNA.
