Commissioner Gary Bettman going all out to get league's way in CBA talks -NHL Update
When talks for a new labour deal kicked off between the National Hockey League (NHL) and Players’ Association, it seemed as if everything would be going smooth until Commissioner Gary Bettman unleashed the devil.
Surprisingly, Bettman is now openly using all dirty tactics in the book to get the way of the league and have players absolutely dominated by team owners instead of the rights and shares they are demanding for.
In the form of threats, the commissioner also termed there to be another lockout if there was no deal reached by the time the current contract between the two came to an end, which is on September 15. Obviously, Bettman is playing this move to pressurise
the players union into giving into their demands and ultimately going with what the league says due to their needing to be mutual consent on whether a season can continue without a new deal in place.
With that said, Gary Bettman is not going to give that permission and will ultimately use that to his benefit.
In the start, many had termed the NHL’s first offer about reducing the players share in revenue from 56 to 47 percent along with no arbitration, signing or potential bonuses and a five-year entry-level deal for all, as an ice breaking deal without an significance,
but Bettman played it out quite smartly, to making it their full and final offer.
"There are a variety of other issues that are involved in collective bargaining and this Collective Bargaining Agreement that we've also been able to engage on where we do have counter proposals going both ways, where we've exchanged views and ideas on proposals,
made movements and had some agreements," Deputy Commissioner, Bill Daly, said. "It's all part of the big process, but obviously the critical part of this negotiation will come down to the economics.”
There is still time for the two stakeholders to go all out and come on a mutual agreement, but obviously, the league and owners led by commissioner Gary Bettman, are also going into the negotiation process strong and without any willingness to move an inch.
