Commissioner Roger Goodell to keep post till 2019, gets seven year contract extension - NFL News
The National Football League (NFL) announced on Wednesday that Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract has been extended for another seven years till 2019.
Goodell got the job in 2006, beating a handful of candidates to take over the top spot in the NFL after Paul Tagliabue retired from the position.
The 52-year old has overseen a massive increase in the ratings of games with NFL matches making up 23 of the top 25 television shows in the United States of America and in 2011, he negotiated a record nine-year contract with the media, amounting to $3.1
billion for the rights to telecast the game.
His performance during the four and a half month player lockout this year to negotiate a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is seen as the highlight of his career and the 32 owners of the NFL franchises who comprise the NFL compensation committee
released a statement, highlighting their fortune at having Goodell as the League’s commissioner.
Goodell was happy about the extension of his term as commissioner and said that this is the only job he wanted to do in his life.
"It is the only place I have ever wanted to work."
He added further:
"I am grateful for the contributions and counsel of NFL owners in managing our league, the talented staff that supports us, and the players and coaches that perform their magic on the field. It is truly a team effort,"
"I am eagerly looking ahead to the challenge of building on our momentum and doing all we can to improve our game for the fans and everyone that is part of our league."
Goodell has been at the forefront of efforts to increase the NFL’s popularity overseas from the start of his tenure and an NFL fixture in London’s Wembley Stadium has become an annual feature to promote the game overseas.
Moreover, this year the St. Louis Rams will play a home game against the New England Patriots in London, England.
The Commissioner is known for his tough stance on illegal hits and has increased fines and suspensions on players involved to stamp out such behaviour on the field.
No details on the new contract have been released till now.
