Commitment and integrity come first for Washington Redskins’ defensive backs’ coach, Raheem Morris
The newly appointed Washington Redskins’ defensive backs’ coach, Raheem Morris, prioritises commitment and integrity over any other thing. This fact was confirmed when Washington Post reported on Thursday, January 26, 2012, that Morris turned down
an offer to join Minnesota Vikings.
After leaving Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he had spent three years, Morris was approached by both Vikings and Redskins. Vikings wanted him to be their defensive coordinator.
However, when Vikings contacted Morris, he had already made a verbal commitment a day earlier to join Redskins.
Morris said:
“A lot of people might think it's a missed opportunity not going to Minnesota after they offered, but I believe that in this game, all you have is your word and your tape, and I gave these guys my word, and I wanted to come here and help them this year,
and I was going to do it."
Morris was appointed as the youngest head coach of the National Football League (NFL) by Tampa Bay in 2009.
During his tenure, the team performed well, but the present season was an utter failure in which Tampa Bay ended at the bottom of the National Football Conference (NFC) south division after winning just four games and losing 12.
As a result, Morris was fired.
Washington and Minnesota also finished at the bottom of their respective divisions and contacted Morris at the same time.
He met with the officials of both the franchise and decided to join Redskins as Vikings were yet to give him their final answer owing to the ongoing interviewing process with several other candidates.
And when they did, it was too late. Morris had already committed to join Redskins and did not want to back off his words.
Redskins formally announced Morris’s appointment on Monday, January 23.
Raheem is excited to have the opportunity to work under Redskins’ head coach, Mike Shanahan.
He said after joining the franchise:
“Mike Shanahan’s a great coach, he’s been doing it a long time. One of the guys that’s been in this business for forever, so I can definitely learn a lot from him.”
Morris took a step back after leaving the head coaching job and became a defensive backs’ coach. He also turned down another offer which shows that he is a man of his words.
However, his skills and abilities to transform Redskins into a better unit is all that will be looked out for next season.
