Commonwealth Bank Series: Angelo Matthews’ efforts went in vein as Australia beat http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 – Cricket News Update
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Western-Australia-c865 Cricket Association Ground, Perth on Friday, February 10.
Batting first the hosts posted a competitive total of 231 runs. In reply the Lankans could only manage 226.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AD-Mathews-c913, the Sri Lankan all-rounder, put up a valiant effort but his efforts went in vain, as the Aussies held their nerve to win the match by five runs. Mathews (64) was the lone fighter from the Lankan side, who at one stage looked down and out
of the match losing nine wickets with just 180 runs on board. The all-rounder took the match down to the wire but got out on the penultimate delivery of the 50th over.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397, Sri Lankan skipper, was disappointed after losing the second consecutive game under his reign.
The skipper lavished praise on Mathews and his abilities as a finisher. Jayawardene also revealed the reason, as to why he opted to send left-handed batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hettige-Don-Rumesh-Lahiru-Thirimanne-c63124, ahead of Matthews.
Jayawardene said, “Great effort from Angelo. We did the hard work with the ball we did not get a couple of big stands with the bat and we gave away too many wickets in the middle overs to lose our way. Angelo is one who likes to finish games for us, he handles
his situations much better, we sent in the left-hander ahead of him as a left-hander was bowling. It wasn't to be but.”
The Lankan skipper admitted that his side did not play as well as they should have and they did not deserve to win based on that.
Jayawardene said, “We made a few mistakes, couple of lost catches, we made too many mistakes, we didn't deserve to win it.”
Australia will look to keep the momentum going into the next match, when they face the 2011 World Cup winners, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, on Sunday, February 12 at the Adelaide Oval. On the other hand, the Sri Lankan team have a break of three days and will go up against India
on Tuesday, February 14.
