Sri Lanka registered their first win of the Commonwealth Bank Series after thrashing the hosts, Australia, in 6th game of the tournament by 8 wickets (with 101 balls remaining).
The rain affected match that was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday, February 17 saw the hosts being dismissed for 158 from 40.5 overs. Sri Lanka in reply chased down the total in 24.1 overs, only losing two wickets in the process.
Sri Lanka not only brought an end to their losing streak but they also won the game by a big margin, which earned them a bonus point, and kept them in contention for the series finals.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397, the Sri Lankan skipper, was thrilled with the victory considering that the World Cup finalists were in a must win situation. The veteran batsman made a daring move by opening the innings, and was glad that the risk paid off, as he played
an unbeaten knock of 61 runs.
Jayawardene said, “We needed a start, I have done opening before, and thankfully it worked today. We knew we had to win today, the bonus point was the icing on the cake.”
The Lankan skipper lavished praise on his bowlers, who restricted Australia to a low total on a pitch that offered little assistance to pacers. The ball seemed to grip off the pitch, and skilfully the Sri Lankan bowlers took the pace off the ball, which
caught the Australian batsmen off guard. It was difficult to score runs and most shots were miscued in the air.
Speaking fondly of his bowlers’ adaptability, Jayawardene said, “Our bowlers are capable of adapting to different conditions. The slower balls are all about getting it in the right place.”

He said, “The pitch didn't have the sort of pace we thought it had and their bowlers capitalised. We thought we could use the seam of the ball and capitalise, but that wasn't the case. Full credit to Sri Lanka, they bowled and fielded really well.”
