Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi: Preparations
Heads of the Missions for the Commonwealth Games were briefed by members of the CWG Organizing Committee and the Government of India in New Delhi on the 15th of September. The management in India has consecutively failed to meet their deadlines
to prepare the Games and most importantly the construction of the venues where the Games will be held.
The Organizing Committee justified these delays by explaining that there was a shortage of labour along with heavy rainfalls during the monsoon season due to which the working class at the construction site had to face a lot of issues. The Missions of the
Commonwealth countries were also assured of the efficient security preparations for the mega event which will be taking place from the 3rd to the 14th of October, 2010.
The Missions also sought for a briefing on the fatal dengue threat persisting in the region apart from just the security and infrastructure issues. The Organizing Committee then briefed the Missions with the steps that the government has taken in a bid to
secure the athletes from dengue fever.
Indian Sports Secretary Sindhushree Khullar and the Cabinet Secretary of the Delhi Government Rakesh Mehta carried out this briefing.
There have been serious delays in the construction of the venues and most of the stadiums have not even been tried or tested up till now, which is a grave problem. Also, during the process of the construction of CWG infrastructure in Delhi, the government
had to face corruption at its worst and the threat of the spread of dengue fever in the region was a major setback for the CWG Organizing Committee and the labourers. The epidemic has already set fear amongst a number of athletes from across the world.
During the past few months, the security management has carried out a number of press conferences about the security preparations, which was the main concern of many of the countries participating in the Games. Moreover, government officials have assured
the sports boards and concerned authorities of the Commonwealth Nations that the security preparations are absolutely up to the mark which is the responsibility of the Indian Government.
The Government of India has also built a CWG Village near Akshardham for the visiting 700 delegates from over 71 participating countries to lodge in during their stay in India for the Games. Most of the delegates have arrived in the country and will move
to this village today, the 16th of September. These delegates also include the chefs-de-mission from the participating nations.
The Delegation Registration Meeting will also begin from today. Delegates will participate in this meeting and are currently staying in various five star hotels across New Delhi.
Another event which will be taking place today is the soft inauguration of the Games Village which is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River in India according to sources within the Organizing Committee.
He also said that after the soft opening of the Village, the delegates will be transported to the Village where they will be given the ultimate hospitality and state of the art facilities to have a great time during their stay in India for the Commonwealth
Games.
The member of the Organizing Committee also said that media will also be taken on a guided tour of the Village to tell the world how hard the management has worked for the Games. The Organizers will conduct a media tour after the athletes and other delegates
arrive for the registration meeting.
It was also told that work at the Village has already begun. Moreover, the kitchen has already started preparing and serving meals to the lodgers of the Village from Monday.
Wrestling World Champion Sushil Kumar of India is expected to win gold at this Commonwealth Games. The proud wrestler said that he feels very lucky to be the first ever Indian wrestler to win a gold medal in the World Championships and considers it a big
achievement after the Summer Olympics of 2008 and just before the Commonwealth Games of 2010.
