Commonwealth Games 2010, Scotland wins silver in swimming relay
Team Scotland's relay team was seen gleaming with joy after they finished the 4 into 200 metre freestyle race on the third day of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. They team celebrated its success and acknowledged the inspiration of Eileen Adams, who
was more than a coach to Andrew Hunter and the rest of the team.
In the post race interview, Andrew told reporters that Adams must be smiling from heaven to see the team win the silver medal in one of the most challenging events of swimming. He went on to say that while swimming in the race, all the swimmers of the relay
team were thinking about was how happy Adams would have been to see her trainees and students perform so well in a mega event like the Commonwealth Games.
Hunter also added that the lady meant a lot to the relay team since she always stood up for them and by their side through thick and thin. Hunter mentioned her death in April and expressed his grief over her demise. He added that she was an amazing lady
and will always be remembered by the relay team.
Hunter emphasized a lot on his attachment with the lady as he said that he was 13 when she first started training him and his compatriots David and Robbie. Moreover, he said that the three of them would not have been able to win this medal if she had not
been their coach and mentor. The relay team repeatedly dedicated the medal to the late Eileen Adams.
The Scottish relay team consisted of the 200 metre gold medalist Robbie Renwick, David Carry, Andrew Hunter, and, Jack Scott. The swimmers struggled through the waters to achieve this victory since they had tough competition coming from the New Zealand and
Canadian teams.
The fastest swim was given by Andrew Hunter, who was so enthusiastic to win this race, and then dedicate the medal to his mentor, Eileen Adams. He swam even faster than his individual 200 metre event average timing.
Gold medalist, Renwick also proved to be a great asset for the team. This medal was the second medal won by Renwick at a Commonwealth Games event. David Carry, also a gold medalist, was equally delighted as the rest of the team to win the silver medal and
said that the medal was very special to him.
In the post race interview, he was recorded as saying that he definitely needed this medal to add to his achievements. He went on to say that he is extremely pleased with the performance of the team at the Games. He also expressed his deepest happiness for
being back on the podium. He admitted that the success did not come easy to the team and especially for him since he was having a hard day. Yet, he was determined to win the race and was content to have concluded the day with a medal.
The race started with Australia in the lead and concluded as such, with Australia setting a new Games record in the event. The Australian team finished the race in a time of 7 minutes and 10.29 seconds. Team Scotland finished the race in 7 minutes and 14.02
seconds. South African swimming team was the winner of the bronze medal in this particular event. The fans were disappointed with the performance of the New Zealand team since it did not clinch any medal.
The first medal that any Scott athlete won on the third day of the Delhi Commonwealth Games was the silver medal in cycling. The team sprint event was finished in the second place by the Scott duo Jenny Davis and Charline Joiner. The winner of the gold medal
in this event was again Australia’s Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloch. Australia is leading the Commonwealth Games so far with the maximum number of gold medals.
