Commonwealth Games 2010, qualifiers in swimming preliminaries (Part 2)
Women’s 100 metre breaststroke:
The first three spots finishers in the prelims of the event were Kate Haywood of England, Samantha Marshall of Australia and Sarah Katsoulis also of Australia. The trio of these athletes finished the event in 1:08s seconds.
Kate took 1 minute and 8.37 seconds, while Samantha and Sarah took 1 minute and 08.41 seconds and 1 minute and 08.43 seconds respectively. Those who landed on the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth spots were Leisel Jones of Australia (1:09.22), Martha
McCabe of Canada (1:09.91), Annamay Pierse also of Canada (1:10.00), Stacey Tadd of England (1:10.69) and Kerry Buchan of Scotland (1:11.09).
The semi final field will be completed by the following swimmers. Kathryn Johnstone of Scotland (1:11.14), Alia Atkinson of Jamaica (1:11.47), Lowri Tyan of Wales (1:11.53), Sara Lougher of Wales( 1:11.62), Rebecca Ajulu-Bushell of England (1:12.12), Sycerika
McMahon of Northern Ireland (1:12.22), Georgia Holderness of Wales (1:12.22) and Christina Loh of Malaysia (1:12.14).
ParaSport Women’s S9 100 freestyle:
Sprint races are one of the biggest challenges for all the swimmers. Those who qualified for these events scheduled on the fourth day of the Games include Natalie tu Toit of South Africa, also the gold winner of the S9 50 metre freestyle event and thus was
declared as the best paralymic swimmer of all time. She concluded the prelim in a time of 1 minute and 2.85 seconds.
She was followed by Stephanie Milward of England and Ellie Cole of Australia, who finished the race in 1:06.39 and 1:06.98 respectively. Annabelle Williams of Australia and claimed the fourth spot in a time of 1:07.25. Katarina Roxon of Canada and Shanntol
Ince of Trinidad took 1:09.94 and 1:14.01 respectively. They were followed by Kiran Tak (1:27.02) and Anjani Patel (1:46.68) of India, who will also be swimming in the finale event.
Women’s 50 metre freestyle:
Fran Halsall of England topped the prelim by finishing the race in 25.05 seconds. The athletes who secured the second and third spot were Yolane Kukla and Marieke Gueher of Australia. The former took 25.47 seconds while the latter took 25.55 seconds to complete
the race.
Hayley Palmer of New Zealand was fourth with a time of 25.58 seconds, while Victoria Poon of Canada was fifth (25.60 seconds). Amy Smith of England took 25.67 seconds, Allice Mills of Australia (25.73 seconds) and Lai Lwan Chui of Malaysia (26.38 seconds)
were also in the top eight finishers.
The rest of the athletes, who will be competing in the semi finals include Amaka Gessler of New Zealand (26.40 seconds), Lucy Ellis of Scotland (26.63 seconds), Cherelle Thompson of Trinidad (26.65 seconds), Jessica Sylvester of England (26.74 seconds),
Sara Hamilton of Scotland (26.80 seconds), Georgia Holderness of Wales (20.01 seconds), Chii Lin Leung of Malaysia (27.15 seconds) and Anna-Liza Mopia Jane of Papau New Guinea (27.30 seconds).
Men’s 100 metre backstroke:
The first place finisher of the prelim of this event was the Wales’ athlete Macro Loughran, who touched the wall in a time of 54.95 seconds. Daniel Bell (55.03 seconds), Liam Tancock (55.15 seconds) and Christopher Walker-Hebborn (55.18 seconds), Ashley
Delaney (55.35 seconds) and Daniel Arnamnart (55.63 seconds) qualified the prelim.
Charl Crous of South Africa finished the race in 55.69 seconds, while Gareth Kean of New Zealand finished the race in 55.85 seconds to land in the top eight swimmers in the meet.
The rest of the finalists of the semi final event are Charles Francis (56.06 seconds), Ryan Bennett (56.07 seconds), Craig McNally (56.92 seconds), Tobias Oriwol (57.15 seconds), Ian Barr Kumarakulasinghe (58.54 seconds), Badrinath Melkote (59.03 seconds),
Heshan Unamboowe (59.35 seconds), Zane Jordan (50.89 seconds).
Men’s 400 Individual Medley:
The following athletes made it to the finale of the aforementioned events, after qualifying the prelim with the given timings. Riaan Schoeman (4:18.46), Joseph Roebuck (4:18.56), Lewis Smith (4:18.56) were among the top three finalists. Those who completed
the field were Thomas Haffield, Chad Le Clos, Roberto Pavoni, Thomas Fraser Holmes and Brian Johns.
