Commonwealth Games 2010: Best ever Commonwealth record scored by Indians
The athletes of the host nation have been giving brilliant performances in almost all the disciplines at the Delhi Games, but this one is particularly significant. In a time span of just an hour, Indian shooters clinched 4 medals, two gold and two silver
medals in the competitions that concluded this morning. The winners of the gold medals are Heena Sudhu and Annu Raj Singh in the 10 metre air pistol duo events. The venue, Karni Singh Shooting Range, witnessed the Indian shooters to set a Commonwealth Games
record in New Delhi. This gold medal elevated the medal tally of Team India to 31 gold medals, while it was the 14th gold medal won by Indian shooters.
The other two medals (silver) were won by the world champion Teaswini Sawant in the women’s 50 metre prone event and Samresh Jung and Chandrasekhar Kumar Chaudhry in the 25 metres standard pistol duo event.
The gold medal was clinched by the Indian athletes in the women’s 10 metre air pistol on grounds of count back. Formerly, there was a tie between India, Canada and Australia in this event, since all the three teams had 759 points. Canada could just manage
to win the bronze medal since the team had a few number of 10s out of the 14 that its shot. Meanwhile, Australia and India both had 21.
Thus, the silver medal was bagged by the Australian shooters duo, Dina Aspandiyarova who had 384 points and Pamela McKenzie who had 375 points. Dorothy Ludwig and Lynda Hare of Team Canada had 380 and 379 points respectively.
The gold medal in the 50 metre prone event, the gold medal was won by the Team Scotland’s athlete Jen McIntosh with a Games record of 697 points. Jen surpassed the record set by Australian Carolyn Quigley (590) and India’s Roopa Unnikrishnan at the Kuala
Lumpur edition of the Commonwealth Games in 1998.
Meanwhile, the gold medal in the men’s 25 metre standard pistol event, was won by the duo from Team Singaore. Bin Gai of Singapore had 564 points, while Lip Meng Poh had 552 points. The team had a total score of 1,116 points. The Indian shooter, Jung and
Chaudhry had 561 and 542 points respectively, summing up to a total of 1,103 points. Michael Gault and Iqbal Ubhi of Team England bagged the bronze medal in this particular meet at the Karni Singh Shooting Range on Tuesday.
