Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi: Commonwealth Organising Committee says sorry for “collective failure”
Finally, the Organising Committee of India for the 2010 Commonwealth games has officially announced an apology for the “collective failure” after three incidents have taken place in the last two days.
The treasurer of the Organising Committee AK Mattoo, admitting the failure has apologised for a "collective failure" as the arrangements for 2010 Commonwealth games to be staged in Delhi continue to be dogged by troubles.
The apology from AK Mattoo, who is a prominent member of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, came on the same day when the president of Commonwealth Games Federation, Michael Fennell was planned to have a meeting with the prime minister of India
Dr Manmohan Singh. The meeting was to discuss the crisis that the organising committee has been facing over the last few days.
Talking to the media reporters, OC's treasurer showed his apology upon the failure of world class preparations.
"I apologise for whatever has happened, whether directly or indirectly by us or by one of the stakeholders in this event.”
Mattoo said that the Organising Committee is really sad apologised for the incidents.
"I genuinely feel sorry for whatever has happened and would like to apologise not only on the part of the OC but everybody else who is committed. This is a collective failure."
The Commonwealth Games Organising Committee has been heavily criticised over the last few days due to the "filthy" living conditions in the athletes' village as well as poor infrastructure around the facilities.
On Tuesday a luminous new steel-and-concrete suspension over-bridge linking a car park and the at the main event venue Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium collapsed. The disaster left at least 23 constructors injured raising questions about the safety of the infrastructure
being prepared in a mad rush for the opening ceremony of the event planned on 3rd of next month.
It turned out to be coffin in the nail when a part of the ceiling in the weightlifting stadium crashed yesterday.
Mattoo said that all these incidents combine have negated the efforts of the teams involved in the preparations of the event.
"All said, the efforts put in by the agencies involved in the Commonwealth Games - the organising committee, the Sports Authority of India, the Delhi Development Authority, the Public Works Department, the Central Public Works Department and the New
Delhi Municipal Corporation - have been negated by these incidents."
Participating countries were already reluctant about participating in the games owing to the filthy living conditions but yesterday’s incident resulted in the postponement of departure of athletes from various countries.
