Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi: Games Village being considered unfit for human habitation by Scotland delegates
Scotland is the second country after New Zealand who is having issues with the living conditions in the Games Village, constructed for the delegates and athletes of the Commonwealth Games on the banks of the Yamuna River. The delegates from Scotland have
accused the management of the Village of maintaining filthy living conditions for the people. They further went on to call the place unsafe and unfit for human habitation.
When the team Scotland reached the Games Village on Tuesday, the members of the team were extremely unhappy with the block of the Village that was allotted to them. The squad lodged a complaint with the Organizing Committee and asked them to reallocate them
a block in the Village that up to their mark so they could conclude their accommodation process and start practising for the Games since there is less than a fortnight left for the event to start.
The Team Scotland said, during a press release that they are looking forward to taking part in the Games and is more than enthusiastic to play at the event, however they said that they will not compromise on any issue regarding the health, safety and security
of the team members.
The statement that Team Scotland recorded with news correspondents also said that the Games Village is supposed to be the heart of any Commonwealth Games and is important for the successful staging of the event. The team further said that the Indian Organizing
Committee of the Commonwealth Games had promised the International delegates that they will be provided with the best facilities and the standards will those that are found in the most developed nations of the world.
The statement read that when the team reached New Delhi on Thursday, the 16th of September, the officials of the Team Scotland visited the building which they found extremely unhygienic despite so many delays in the construction of the Village.
The officials said that it looked like the building was destroyed and constructed over a couple of times and that made it unsafe for human inhabitation. The team has also accused the Organizing Committee of not using good quality construction material. The
Team Scotland is also complaining about the block that they have been allotted in the Village.
The team was allotted another block, which was again not up to the mark for it. The main concern of the Team is hygiene and maintenance. The Scotland team management, with the help of the volunteers of the Commonwealth Games, cleaned their whole block from
the top right to the bottom. On the other hand, the other Residential Zones are in a highly filthy state according to the officials of the Team Scotland.
The chef de mission of the Team Scotland Jon Doig called a meeting with his counterparts to discuss the situation and pressurize the Indian government to take action on their complaints about the state of living conditions in the Games Village. Jon also
met up with the High Commissioners of the participating countries.
It is about time that the Village issues should be resolved now. The Games cannot proceed smoothly with all these issues hanging to the side. Even before the delegations arrived in India, the preparation process was subjected to a huge deal of allegations
and criticism from within the country. A number of important personalities have also boycotted the Commonwealth Games because whole procedure has gone against the interest of the local public.
The PM Man Mohan Singh and the Sports Minister took a tour to the venues where the Games’ opening and closing ceremonies. The opening and closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games will take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. The PM took
a round of the stadium himself to make sure that all the facilities were up to the mark. The repute of the Indian administration is dependent on the success of the Commonwealth Games. After the 2008 Summer Olympics, this is the first mega event that will be
taking place in the region.
