Commonwealth Games 2010: McGoldrick on his way to win the gold medal
The youngest Welsh boxer playing at the 2010 Commonwealth Games is Sean McGoldrick. He is heading towards winning the gold medal at the final event of boxing which is due to take place tomorrow.
McGoldrick gave an out of the world performance in his encounter with the Beijing 2008 bronze medallist Bruno Julie last evening in New Delhi. The Welsh boxer recorded a 2-1 points victory against the Julie of Mauritius.
After winning the event from the Olympic medallist, McGoldrick is only one win away from being a part of one of Wales’ most select clubs. This honour has only been received by Dennis Reardon (1938), Howard Winstone (1958) and Jamie Arthur (2002).
The teenager boxer will have to pin the Sri Lankan boxer, Manju Wanniarachchi to clinch the gold medal in the boxing. McGoldrick worked very hard under the training of the coach Tony Borg in order to defeat Julie. The encounter was more crucial in the second
round of the match, especially when Julie missed a left.
The Welsh boxer made it to the finals after he survived an onslaught in the last 30 seconds of the third round. In the post event interview, McGoldrick said, “It was complete patience. It is not just about getting in there and slugging it out, it is about
being patient and who picks the better shots.” The young athlete went on to say, “That is what I did. I waited against a very classy opponent who I made come forward. He does not normally come forward, he is a back foot fighter and I took him out of his comfort
zone.”
While McGoldrick’s teammates Jermaine Asare and Keiron Harding did not do well in the light-heavy weight and middle weight events respectively, McGoldrick made Team Wales come to the spotlight at the Commonwealth Games.
The content and enthusiastic McGoldrick was also recorded as saying, “This is my third overall international tournament and Ihave beaten an Olympic bronze and world silver medallist. I have trained really hard and needed a lot of support from my family,
especially my dad, and it just all paid off.”
“I am here for gold and I will give it my best shot and if that is enough I will come out with gold”, said the 18 year old Welsh boxer Sean McGoldrick, who will be contending the final boxing event for a gold medal.
