Commonwealth Games 2010: Performances of English tennis players day three
James Ward of England ousted Scottish doubles expert Jamie Murray in two sets to progress into the third round of the men’s tennis competition at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi on Wednesday. The final match score was 7-5 6-0.
After winning the tough opening set in New Delhi, James who is seeded number four in the championship, swept to win comfortably in the end.
Meanwhile, Ross Hutchins of Scotland, who has teamed Murray in the Davis Cup, was defeated in two sets at the hands of Josh Milton on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-4 6-2.
The third seed Katie O'Brien of England suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Rushmi Chakravarthi in the women's tennis competition on Wednesday. The Indian tennis player who is ranked 472 spots below the world number 144 Katie, bounced back from being
outplayed in the first set to win the next two. The final match score was 1-6 7-6 7-5.
On the other hand, Guernsey's Heather Watson had no such issues as she comfortably got the better of her Indian tennis opponent Poojashree Venkatesha in two sets on Wednesday. The final match score was 7-6 6-3.
Josh Goodall, another England contender in the men’s draw defeated Marvin Rolle from Bahamas in two sets. The final match score was 6-4 6-3.
In the squash competition in New Delhi on Wednesday at Siri Fort Sports Complex, top seed Nick Matthew from  England comfortably made his way into the final four with an 11-7 11-5 11-6 straight-games victory over Cameron Pilley from Australia.
Nick’s countrymen Peter Barker is also in the final four after successfully dispatching off his Australian tennis foe, Stewart Boswell in four sets on Wednesday.
The third English contender to win on Wednesday was James Willstrop who after recovering from two games down beat his Australian tennis foe, David Palmer in New Delhi.
