Commonwealth Games 2010: Team Australia clinches two more gold medals in the cycling events
Being on the top of the medal tally list of the 19th Commonwealth Games, Australia grabbed two more gold medals in the cycling events on the fourth day of the Commonwealth Games, New Delhi. The medals were won by the young athlete Megan Dunn in
the track cycling event of the Games. The athlete took the tally above again, with Australia dominating the CWG Dehli.
Those who witnessed the race described as being very intense. Dunn is a 19-year-old athlete, the winner of the women’s 10 km scratch race. She maintained her speed for the first 38 laps, and then pulled ahead of the pack when two laps were remaining. Joanne
Kiesanowski of Team New Zealand won the silver medal in this particular event, while the winner of the bronze medal was Anna Blyth of England.
Australia’s athletes also won the men’s team pursuit, adding to the team’s gold medal tally by defeating New Zealand.
Dunn particularly found it challenging to win this race on the fourth day of the Delhi Games, since she was already fatigued by the 25 km points race that she won on Wednesday. In the post race interview she said “I did not really expect a medal today. I
loved the feeling of winning yesterday and it made me hungry for it today.” Dunn struggled to win the race against Rushlee Buchanan of New Zealand, especially during the last two laps, which determined her victory in the event. However, it is also true that
Rushlee was the only competition that Dunn had to face during the race. She went on to say that “It helped having New Zealander out there because I could chase something, and I could feel when the bell went I was just going to hang on. I did not want to get
into a sprint at the end, so I saw the opportunity to go solo and it paid off.”
Dunn’s next encounter will be the women’s road race scheduled for Sunday.
As for the second gold medal won in the men’s team pursuit, new Games records were set by Jack Bobridge, Michael Hepburn, Cameron Meyer and Dale Parker. The record is of 3 minutes and 55.476 seconds, while the qualifying time for this event was set at 4
minutes and 00.285 seconds. Bobridge clinched his second gold medal of the Games by winning this event.
