Commonwealth Games 2010: Tennis sensation Sania Mirza makes her way into the finals
The Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza advanced into the final of the singles event at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi after getting the better of Olivia Rogowska of Australia in a total of three sets on Friday. The final
match score was 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The second seed Mirza, as a result of this victory, has made her way into the final of the multi-discipline event on the very first occasion in her career.
Meanwhile, Somdev Devvarman, from the men’s side, also progressed into the men’s singles title battle after defeating Matthew Ebden in two sets in the semi-final on Friday. The final match score was 6-3, 6-1. The match as
stretched to a time period of seventy one minutes in New Delhi.
Somdev however missed a place in the doubles final as he along with his partner Rohan Bopanna lost at the hands of Ken Skupski and Ross Hutchins of England. The final match score was 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Mirza, on the other hand, played some tremendous tennis to get past her sixth seed foe on Friday. The Indian, after the match, while commenting on her victory said, “I knew she would not win otherwise she would have been
in the top fifty. When you are not timing the ball well you have to come up with something different. I am very happy that I fought hard."
The local side is also the top favourite to win the majority of the medals at the event in the absence of top contenders such as Andy Murray from Great Britain, Samantha Stosur from Australia as well as Lleyton Hewitt who
is a former world number one.
After falling down in the opening set, Mirza bounced back strongly in the following set and played more intelligently to level the scores at 4-4. A crosscourt winner during the ninth game of the second set helped the Indian
star take a lead of 40-30. She later did well to win the set.
In the decisive set, Sania raced to a lead of 4-1 before her opponent took three straight games. Mirza however, who was well supported by the home crowd, didn’t give up and went on to win the match in the end.
Mirza, after confirming her final spot at the Commonwealth Games added, "It is great to have the home crowd behind you but there is a lot of pressure as well. My heart is beating a big fast right now. It feels pretty good,
yeah.”
