Commonwealth Games 2010: third day medal tally, Australia leads, India second
The 19th Commonwealth Games have finally started amidst the unending controversies and problems. The attention of the athletes has now been diverted to the competitions rather than the hygienic and security conditions of the Games Village and
other venues. With a spectacular opening ceremony on Sunday evening and three complete and successful days of competitions, the Australian athletes lead the Commonwealth Games with the most number of medals won during these three days. The host country, India
is on the second position with respect to medals. The third position is so far occupied by the British athletes.
Australia has always been the dominator of the Commonwealth Games. Be it the Melbourne Games in 2006 or the Delhi Games 2010, Australia concludes every day with numerous medals. India has also been giving great performances in the Games, especially in the
shooting and wrestling events. At the end of the third day, the Indian athletes had won six gold medals. Gagan Narang in the 10 metre Air Rifle event, Renu Bala Chanu in the 58 kg weightlifting event, Anisa Sayeed in the 25 metre women’s pistol event, Omkar
Singh in the 50 metre pistol event, Rajinder Kumar in the 55 kg Greco Roman event and Ravi Kumar in the 69 kg weightlifting event were successful in bringing royals for India.
The silver medals won by the Indian athletes are as follows. Abhinav Bindra was the winner of silver medal in the 10 metre Air Rifle event, Rahi Sarnobat and Anisa Sayeed in the 25 metre women’s pistol event, Manoj Kumar in the 84 kg Greco Roman event,
Asher Noria and Ronjan Sodhi in the men’s pair double trap event.
Moving on to the Indian athletes who won the bronze medal on the third day of the Delhi Games, there are three names to mention. Dharmendra Dalal won the bronze medal in the 120 kg Greco Roman category, Sunil Kunar in the 66 kg Greco Roman category, Prasanta
Karmakar in the 50 metre freestyle Para sport event.
The list of countries and the number of medals it has won so far in the 19th Commonwealth Games is as follows:
Australia is in the lead with a total of 21 gold medals, 25 silver medals and 10 bronze medals adding up to a total of 46 medals.
India is struggling for the top position with 24 medals so far, including 11 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze.
England is on the third position with six gold medals, 11 silver and 9 bronze summing up to a total of 26 medals.
Malaysia follows England with a total of 9 medals won so far including 3 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze.
The South African team is occupying the same position as that of Malaysia with a total of 9 medals; 3 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze.
Next is Nigeria whose athletes have just managed to win 2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal. Canada has disappointed the fans with winning only 2 gold, 1 silver and 8 bronze medals.
Singapore gold tally for three days includes 4 medals including 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. In the first three days of the Games, Scotland won 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals. Kenya managed to clinch 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. Uganda
grabbed 1 gold until the third day. Sri Lanka has won 1 silver and 1 bronze medal.
New Zealand has so far managed to clinch 5 silver and 2 bronze medals and is consistently longing for a gold medal in swimming, netball and hockey disciplines. Wales has also disappointed the fans by winning only 1 silver and 1 bronze medal.
Pakistan and Bangladesh have both won just 1 medal. The former has won the silver while the latter has won the bronze medal. Isle of Man and Trinidad and Tobago have also won a single bronze medal so far.
