Commonwealth Games 2018, played in Australia, will leave evergreen bequest for squash – Squash News
Commonwealth Games 2018 will be played in Australia. Squash and weightlifting matches will be contested in the most privileged refurbished sporting arenas of Australia, Runaway Bay Sports Complex. Squash courts have been upgraded
with new state-of-the-art facilities that will make sure that players, participants and spectators can enjoy the game in healthy atmosphere.
Six doubles and four singles courts are being prepared at the arena that will also feature a temporary show court that will be built soon for further investigation and display purposes. Officials have been satisfied with the security
arrangements and showed no concerns during their visit to the Runaway Bay Sports Complex.
Squash Australia CEO Gary O’Donnell proclaimed that Games will leave a lasting legacy for the sport of squash in Australia and provide an opportunity for the youngsters to witness such an elite event. He said “This is an excellent
outcome for our sport and ensures squash will continue to have a high profile in one of Australia’s fastest growing areas”.
Challen Stowell, Australian junior women’s representative, and Will Mountford-Jones, Queensland Under-15 champion, are couple of those names that are going to be representing their country in future and will be counted amongst
star of squash until 2018. They are the upcoming talent and must hit their prime during Commonwealth Games 2018 to please local crowd.
Gary O’Donnell added “Winning a Commonwealth Games gold medal is one of the highest honours in world squash. Australia has a proud record at the Commonwealth Games since the sport was introduced in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, winning
seven gold medals, eight silvers and 11 bronzes over that period”.
The rest of the sporting events will feature at multi-sport facilitated Gold Coast arena, Queensland, Australia. There are several legends of squash that reside in Gold Coast, Australia including the family of legendary Geoff Hunt,
former world champion Rodney Eyles and former world number two Brett Martin.
Marin was one of the best players of squash in his era of 1980’s and laid several landmarks in his outstanding career whilst Eyles’s love for game has kept him connected to it, currently coaches squash to youngsters at Coast.
CEO Squash Australia also congratulated the entire team of Gold Coast for making it possible to feature such a royal event. The tournament is scheduled to be contested from April 4-15, 2018.
