Commonwealth Games: Day two
England got their Commonwealth Games gold medal tally up and running with a double dose of delight for the swimmers. Fran Hassel then Liam Tancock both claimed the gilded medal in the pool for England in five glorious minutes.
India also got their gold medal tally underway as well at the start of the day; Abhinav Bindra and partner Gagan Narang got the ball rolling for the host nation in the men's air rifle pairs and it turned out to be a fruitful day for the hosts.
However, it’s Australia who continue to dominate though clinching golds throughout the day, including Anna Meares in the cycling, and in the women’s gymnastics as well as a host of medals in the pool. They currently sit aloft the medal table racking up medals by the minute.
Jamie Murray triumphed for Scotland in the tennis beating Rodney Careh of the Bahamas in straight sets. Unfortunately Scotland’s men’s and women’s hockey sides both suffered defeats, the men going down 3-0 to Pakistan while the women lost 2-1 to South Africa. England smashed Wales 4-1 as the other home nations clashed in an all British dust up.
Scotland’s despair turned to triumph later on though as Robbie Renwick stole the 200metres freestyle final by literally the skin of his teeth.
In the badminton, Wales obliterated Kenya 5-0 and Northern Ireland defeated Sri Lanka 3-2 in the mixed team event. Sadly the Isle of Man lost 3-2 to the Seychelles in the battle of the giants.
There was joy for Malaysia as Mohammad Rizal Tisin won their first ever cycling medal in a thrilling final of the men’s 1k time trials, beating Australians Scott Sunderland in the process and taking Chris Hoy’s record as well.
In the women’s 53kg weightlifting Marilou Dozois Prevost triumphed for Candia with a superhuman effort.
So the games are well underway now the good news is that they have laid the turf in the new stadium and so the field events will be fine and the shot-putters that made it over can breathe a sigh of relief.
More good news is that the athletics start today so the more interesting events get underway, but to be honest it looks like Australia have the games wrapped up already.
