Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010: Indian Hockey Team Defeat Bitter Rival Pakistan at Major Dhyan Chand Stadium
New Delhi – Indian men’s hockey team defeated its bitter rival Pakistan at an overflowed and sold-out Major Dhyan Chand stadium. Throughout the match, passion, colour and excitement rocked the stadium and the spectators could finally observe the thrill which
was lacking during the whole event of common games. For Indians, the love of hockey comes second to the much loved cricket; however, the clash at Sunday night proved to be a real rocking event.
The Indian team depicted one of its best performances during the event, where thrilled and vibrant crowd of 19,000 spectators at jam packed Major Dhyan Chand Stadium enjoyed each and every move of the local players. However, the Indian side truly gave a
splendid performance to outdo the rivals, but the crowd too played its role for putting and keeping the neighbouring players under pressure.
As the Indian players made an entrance onto the ground, the spectators welcomed them with standing ovation. The Indian team succumbed to the pressure from its spectators for performing well and did not leave any stone unturned for thrashing the traditional
rival on the field. Right from the start till the end, Indian players kept the complete control of the game. Within 20 minutes of the start of the game, India smashed 4 goals to the opponents and sent the frenzied crowd into rapture.
Winning the match with marvellous score of 7 against 4 on the board, the Indian hockey players have made their ways to the semi final and have raised the expectations of the spectators even further.
Throughout the whole event of the Delhi Commonwealth Games, Indian side observed the best crowd support during the hockey match when it was facing its counterparts from the neighbouring Pakistan. Owing to the history of wars and cross-border disputes, whenever
either of the side faces other in any sport discipline, the response from the crowd is rather magnanimous, and the situation was no different for the hockey match between both of the sides.
However, low turn up of spectators has been witnessed throughout Delhi Commonwealth Games, but tickets for the hockey match between India and Pakistan had been sold-out weeks ago. The crowd was further enthralled when Rahul Gandhi who hails from the famous
political family, along with his mother Sonia Gandhi, too made his presence ensured during the event. While making an unexpected appearance at the stadium, Rahul and his mother waved at the crowed and the team players to boost up their morale. The enthusiasm
of the Indian side can be judged from the fact that even Suresh Kalmadi, the chairman organizing committee too made it to the stadium to watch the performance of Indian hockey players against the rivals from Pakistan.
From Indian side, Sandeep Singh was the player who scored two goals himself and created the third one within initial few minutes. This made the game totally one sided. With each goal from the domestic team, spectators, including those of high media officials
could not control their excitement and did not mind cheering, jumping and high-fiving with the colleagues. The security officials, who usually remain bored and grim during the sports event, too couldn’t help hiding their excitement over the performance of
the Indian hockey team. However, they were among the ones who were constantly ordering the bubbling crowd to remain calm and sit down.
A large number of Indian spectators dressed up in the national colours of white, green and saffron which comprises of all ages held the national flags in their hands while cheering up at the performance of their team.
Now, after defeating Pakistan the Indians have made it to the semi final. They are to face English hockey players to make it to the competition for the gold. On the other side, Australia would meet their traditional rivals New Zealand to decide about the
gold medal contestants. After the performance, Indian side has showed against Pakistan, the Indian spectators have high hopes from its team to bag more gold for them.
