Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010: Oludamola Osayomi fails drug test and could be disqualified
After the disqualification of the Australian hurdle expert from the women’s 100 metre event on grounds of false start, a Nigerian sprinter is now considered for disqualification from the 100 metre sprint event. According to sources, Oludamola Osayomi’s A-sample
has been tested positive for the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine.
Osayomi is being considered to be stripped of the gold medal in the 100 metre women’s event that took place in the fourth day of the 19th Commonwealth Games, New Delhi. The Commonwealth Games officials and the anti-doping representatives are waiting
for the results of her B-sample for any final judgement.
Methylhexamineamine is the same stimulant that eight Indian athletes, including six wrestlers were tested positive for, earlier this year. It increases alertness, can aid weight loss and sometimes is found in party pills as well as prescription drugs.
Osayomi was declared the winner of the event, after a protest was launched by the English representatives against the Australian hurdle expert, Sally Pearson. As a result of the protest, the Australian sprinter Sally and the English sprinter Laura, both
were disqualified from the event. It resulted in the elevated position of Katherine Endacott of England to the third position. If Osayomi is also stripped of the gold medal, the English sprinter would be awarded the silver medal, while Natasha Mayer will then
be the winner of the gold medal.
The president of the Commonwealth Games Federation Mike Fennell said that if the athlete is finally tested positive for the drug, the news might as well cause a lot of damage to the event’s reputation.
He said, “Any positive test, whether it is a high profile event or not, is something that is very much regretted”. The president went on to say, “We all strive for clean games, clean sport and clean competition.”
“One does not know what sort of damage will accrue because of this particular test. We just want to let everyone know we are very vigilant. This is something we just have to work with and do our oart in monitoring and eliminating doping in sports.”
The president of the CWG Federation also revealed that up till now, 950 doping tests have been conducting for the Delhi Games.
In the women’s 100 metre event, Osayomi finished the race 11.32 seconds later than Pearson finished it. After being disqualified from the this particular event, the hurdle specialist put all her energy into the 100 metre hurdles and succeeded in qualifying
fastest for tonight’s event. On the other hand, Osayomi finished the semi final of the 200 metre event in the fourth spot.
