Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010: Performance of Australia and India May Succeed In Attracting More Crowd in Stadiums
New Delhi – the performance of Australian and Indian Athletes at Delhi Commonwealth games have raised hopes among the organizers for filling in the empty seats at various stadiums. As it has been figured out during the last one week of the event, turnout
of the spectators for watching the sporting competition live at Delhi CWG had been lowest ever in the history of the Commonwealth Games.
Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, the chairman organizing committee blamed the presence of less number of ticket box offices in the city for strangling the response of the spectators. However, the chairman told the media that the problem was fixed and now they were expecting
rather an encouraging response from the local as well as domestic spectators.
While describing regarding how had they gotten rid of the problem, Kalamdi said that they had set new ticket offices in front of every stadium. He further said that the matter, somehow, had been neglected in the beginning, but with the help of the media
personnel and the response from the spectators, the problem had not only been pointed out, it was fixed in the desired way. He claimed that after the efforts of his colleagues, the matter had been completely rectified.
Michael Fennel, the boss of the Commonwealth Games federation stated that to him, the problem was rather inevitable. While defending the Delhi administration, the guy said that while organizing an event as large as commonwealth games, despite of the utmost
efforts, some problems were bound to rise. Fennell went on to saying that the allegations set by the media regarding the incapability of the administrators for handling the issues were rather baseless. “We are dealing with the issues head-on and no one
is pushing the matters under the rug” said the president for the CWG federation rather angrily.
He lamented the fact that there were issues like threats for terror attacks, corruption, dengue fever outbreaks, construction delays, and transportation issues involved for the reported mess up, addressing to which, according to him, lied completely beyond
the mandate of Commonwealth Games Federation.
On the other hand, on medals table, the team Australia met the expectation of the spectators by bagging the highest number of gold medals. Australian athletes took lead at the medal table right from the first day while they continued dominating it till the
last reports came on Friday, 8th of the October. The good luck for Australia surfaced when Anna Meares succeeded in defending her trial title for the 500m, Scott Sunderland Grabbed his medal for the 100m while Jack Bobridge achieved it in his personal
pursuit for 4000m. For Meares, the comeback was rather commendable after she broke her neck in a cycling accident during the world cup 2008.
Talking to the media about her marvellous comeback, she said that the struggle for revival had taught her about life and who she really was. She further said that the time had taught her to become more patient and to appreciate the things more. She said
that she was lucky enough to travel around the world merely for pursuing her favourite sport and earning a good living out of it as well.
On the medals’ table, more success came to Australia when Leiston Pickett made it in the women’s 50m breastroke. They ended with the stellar performance depicted by the team Australia when at the evening it also made it to bag gold in gymnastics women’s
team. The day also brought celebrating moments when Abhinay Bindra and Gagan Narang gave reasons to smile for the local spectators. While sharing his success with the media, Bindra said that after bagging a gold medal at Beijing Olympics, the Indian spectators
had huge expectations from him and that put considerable pressure on him to perform well during the event. The good news for India did not stop at the success of Bindra and Narang, rather they were quickly followed by Anisa Syyed and Rahi Sarnobat who succeeded
in getting rid of their Australian counterparts.
