The Indian badminton player, Saina Nehwal has captured 38th gold medal for her country after defeating Mew Choo Wong of Malaysia in the badminton women’s singles final at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi on Thursday.
With this medal, the local side piped England to earn the second place in the medals tally. The twenty year old Saina triumphed in the final battle with a score line of 21-19, 23-21, and 21-13 at the Siri Fort Complex.
As a result of this victory, the world number three Nehwal has registered her name as the first female badminton player from India to capture a gold in Commonwealth Games.
Nehwal is also the first Indian player to have successfully made her way into the singles final eight round at the Olympic Games apart from being the first Indian to triumph in the World Junior Badminton Tournament.
The right-hander, who achieved her career highest ranking of world number two back in July, made history in 2009 by triumphing in the Super Series championship and grabbing Indonesia Open with an impressive win over Wang Lin at Jakarta. The Super Series
badminton competition is roughly equivalent to a Grand Slam in the game of tennis.
Saina is currently being coached by the Indonesian badminton legend, Atik Jauhari. She has had a phenomenal year so far as she captured her second career Super Series crown by grabbing first the Singapore Open and then the Indonesian Open. These victories
improved her ranking first to number three and then to number two in the world.
The top seed Saina had previously defeated Wong at the Asian competition, Indian Open title battle, Singapore Super series' opening round as well as the team event of Commonwealth Games. She once again repeated her performance in the title battle on Thursday
to make her country proud.
