Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010: Sania Mirza congratulates Gagan Narang and Sachin Tendulkar for making India proud
The Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza who captured a bronze medal at the tennis event in the Commonwealth Games on Sunday congratulated the legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar and shooter Gagan Narang for making their side proud in their particular sports.
"Tendulkar is everyone's favourite and my congratulations to him for completing forty ninth Test century," Mirza told the media at a news conference in New Delhi on Monday.
The twenty three year old Mirza along with her doubles partner Rushmi Chakravarthi captured the bronze medal in the women’s doubles competition in the multi discipline event, defeating Poojashree Venkatesha and Nirupama Sanjeev in two sets on Sunday. The final match score was 6-4, 6-2.
The right hander Mirza who earlier this season during the month of April married Shoaib Malik, a cricketer from Pakistan, also won a silver medal in the women’s singles event on Saturday after falling down at the hands of Anastasia Rodionova from Australia in the title battle. The final match score was 3-6, 6-2, 6-7(3).
The Hyderabad resident who was also given the Arjuna award by the government of India is well known for her strong forehand ground strokes right from the start of her career. She has had a descent doubles season as she recently won her ninth WTA doubles crown along with her partner Edina Gallovits of Romania, defeating Wanting Liu and Xinyun Han in a two setter clash at the Guangzhou International Women’s Open in China. The final match score was 7-5, 6-3.
Mirza and Rushmi had lost their doubles semi final battle at the hands of Sally Peers and Rodionova of Australia at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in two sets on Saturday. The final match score was 4-6, 4-6.
Poojashree and Nirupama were downed by Jessica Moore and Olivia Rogowska in three sets in the semi finals in New Delhi.
Mirza in her today’s press conference was more effusive in her praise for Gagan, who has already captured a total of four gold medals in the shooting competition of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
"My sister is into shooting and she did go and watch Gagan get his first gold. He has been doing very well and has done the country proud. I hope that he gets the Best Athlete award at the closing ceremony," added the Mumbai born Mirza on Monday.
