Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010: Sania’s Victory Remains Fail to Bag the Medal for India
New Delhi – Sports played at Delhi Commonwealth Games have brought many sweet and bitter memories for India and the case is no different in badminton. Though Sania Nehwal, the much appreciated and loved badminton player of the country had won her lone match,
Malaysia, at the end of the day, defeated India with 3 against 1.
The hopes for India to bag the gold medal in doubles badminton disappeared when Malaysia’s Ei h*i Chin and Kein Keat Koo defeated Indian pair which consisted of Jawala Gutta and V Diju. Similarly, the left handed game in which Indian players had to face
their counterparts from China, Indian players looked so helpless to make it in the game which totally remained one sided. China won the left handed game by 14-21, 21-10, 10-21.
As the Indian side faced a miserable defeat in the men’s double event, the local spectators set their expectations with Kashyap, the world’s 32 hailing from India who had to face world number one Lee Chong Wei in men’s single event. As the game initiated,
Indian spectators found the reason to cheer up as Kashyap initially dominated lee Chong Wei by 21-18 and 21-7 in around 31 minutes.
This was the time when Sania Nehwal made her entrance onto the court to play third rubber of mixed teams final. Having the hopes to make it into the game again, the crowd cheered and fully supported the Indian players. However; their hopes could not materialize
as the game ended with the defeat of the Indian side with Malaysia grabbing the gold medal.
While taking her chance to cheer up the crowd all over again, world number three, the young Sania put her best effort to win her single’s battle. The match was rather thrilling but Sania made it by getting rid over the world’s number 19 Wong Mew Choo by
24-26, 21-17, and 21-14.
When media personnel approached her after the match, the young girl said that she knew from the start that it was difficult to come back into the game when her side was down by 2-0, however, as she did not want to give up without fighting, she decided to
fight it back. Concluding her remarks Sania said that she wanted to show the world that her team did not give up without putting its best efforts.
The men’s double played between Sanave Thomas and India’s Rupesh Kumar with Kien Keat Koo and Boon Heong Tan also ended in the favour of the later team with the scores of 21-12, and 21-19. As the game moved towards its final battle, India left defeated with
1-3 against the two times champions and made it to land at the silvers.
Though at the end of the game, despite of its best efforts Indian badminton team fell to its Malaysian counterparts, but the spirit it shoed during the game was rather commendable and appreciable by the local as well as international spectators.
Though all of the players of Indian Badminton team showed rather good performance, however Sania played rather remarkably. The girl looked passionate about the success till the last moments and did not seem giving up even for a second. Her performance not
only provided a reason to the spectators to cheer up, rather it also helped in boosting the spirit of the rest of the Indian side during the game.
While commenting on her success one of the spectator said that, the reason for Sania’s individual performance was that she knew right from the beginning that the crowd loved her and it had high expectation from her. The pressure to meet the expectations
of her fans kept her charged up throughout the game. He further said that had she not had such a huge support from the spectators, she too could have succumbed to the pressure of the opponents after the performance of rest of her team members. After analyzing
the performance of Sania, it seemed the spectator was quite right in his comments about her.
