Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010: Time to say good bye, Canada announces flag bearer
The spectacular event will be taking place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Thursday evening. The Indian Commonwealth Organizing Committee is holding final rehearsals of the splendid event that will steal the hearts of the delegates from the 71 participating
nations. While the organizers do their job, the chef de Missions are announcing the flag bearers of their teams.
The Canadian flag will be carried by the great cyclist Tara Whitten on the closing ceremony of the 19th
Commonwealth Games New Delhi. Martha Deacon, the chef de Mission of Team Canada announced her name at a press conference that took place this morning in the Indian capital. The athlete managed to bag four medals at the Games, out of which one is gold
and three are bronze. She won the gold medal in the individual time trial event. The bronze medals were clinched by her in the track cycling events. Tara is a 30 year old athlete from Edmonton.
Amongst the other significant athletes of Team Canada is the diver Alexandre Despatie of Laval Que. He bagged three gold medals at the Delhi Games, and set a record of winning nine gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. His team mate Jennifer Abel of Laval
also managed to win away two gold medals and one silver medal at the mega event in Delhi. The Canadian diving team left the Indian capital before the closing ceremony. Kan Pereira, the captain of the Canadian field hockey team carried the flag on the opening
ceremony.
Meanwhile, the organizers are making an effort to address to all the problems that were faced by the delegates at the opening ceremony. For instance, the Australian contingent was made to wait in a tunnel outside the stadium for about an hour which really
disturbed the athletes and representatives of the contingent. The president of the Australian Olympic Association has threatened the organizers of a boycott if the conditions for the delegates are not improved at the closing ceremony.
Australia dominated the Delhi Games, with a medal tally of 172 Games medals. Out of these 72 are gold, 52 are silver and 48 are bronze. Australia is followed by England with a total of 139 medals; 37 gold, 26 silver and 34 bronze. The third spot in the medal
tally is occupied by the host nation with a total of 97 medals (37 gold, 26 silver and 34 bronze).
