Commonwealth Games Hopeful to Include Twenty20 Cricket in Future Events
An official of the Commonwealth Games has expressed desire to include Twenty20 in future events which has become the most popular format of cricket in almost no time.
Talking to the media, the chairman of the review committee of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), Tunku Imran said, “We need to engage the International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) to include cricket as we want to sustain the Games as one of the world's leading
multi-sport events.”
However, he admitted that convincing the ICC will be a difficult task because in last year’s Commonwealth Games hosted by India, the Indian Cricket Board refused to allow the inclusion of Twenty20 cricket in the Games.
During 1998 games held in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Malaysia-c2949, cricket was included in the tournament but was then dropped in the coming years because of disagreement regarding the format between the CGF and the ICC.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 the bidders for the 2018 Games and according to him it will be a great opportunity to include the most popular format of cricket in a country where the game has an astounding fan base.
The unpredictability of Twenty20 makes it splendidly exciting to watch and play and with the growing number of fans, there is no doubt that the Commonwealth Games want it to be added in the list of games that are being played in the event.
Currently, England are the Twenty20 champions, while http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 have also been the predecessor champions in this version of the game and with the championship coming up next year, there is no telling which team will be the new leaders in Twenty20
cricket.
The Indian Premier league has also played a vital role in making the sport popular and has made it a lucrative format for the players to play in.
If the ICC and the BCCI agree on letting Twenty20 format be added in the Commonwealth Games, it will boost the popularity of the event.
However, It may be difficult for the ICC to squeeze in a Commonwealth Twenty20 tournament in the already heavily loaded schedule throughout the year. Another option might be to send the second string teams in the Games to avoid clash between ICC and Commonwealth
pre-scheduled tournaments.
