Commonwealth Games: Somdev Devvarman & Sania Mirza advance to the quarterfinals
Top seed Somdev Devvarman from India advanced into the men’s singles quarterfinal round of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi after defeating Amresh Jayawickreme of Sri Lanka in two sets on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-0, 6-1.
The Indian looked in total control of his game right from the start of the match and got the better of his Sri Lankan foe in just forty one minutes in New Delhi. The Lankan failed to provide any challenge to Devvarman and surrendered without a battle. Amresh missed easy points in a number of games on Wednesday which was clearly evident from the final score.
Somdev won the opening set in just twenty minutes as the top seeded Indian raced through the match with the loss of only ten points. Amresh got on the scoreboard during the start of the decisive set. However, Somdev didn’t allow him to bounce back in the game and won the match easily in the end.
Devvarman, as a result of this victory, will now meet the winner from the match between Rubin Statham of New Zealand and Colin Fleming from Scotland.
He however will play another match later in the day along with Rohan Bopanna in the men’s doubles competition.
Second seed Sania Mirza faced Brittany Teei of the Cook Islands in the following game in the women’s singles event. The local gold medal hopeful was just as brutal as her male compatriot in the opening match of the day and in spite of the fact that Brittany attempted to come back in the second set, Mirza won quite comprehensively in the end. The final match score was 6-0, 6-2.
Mirza looked in tremendous form, outmuscling her foe with great ease from the back of the court and though Teei rallied to grab a couple of games during the decisive set of the match on Wednesday, the outcome was never in doubt. A forced error from Brittany gave the Indian tennis star a famous victory in New Delhi.
In the quarterfinal clash, Mirza will take on the winner of the match between Jacklyn Lambert from Bermuda and Marina Erakovic of New Zealand.
