Commonwealth Mountain and Ultradistance Running Championships set to kick-off in North Wales
The Commonwealth Mountain and Ultradistance Running Championships, which is to observe its second edition this year in North Wales, is all set to kick-off on September 23.
This year’s competition will be constituted by three competitions – 24-hour ultra run, the Up and down Mountain race and finally, the 53km long trail run. Organisers of the event, which are very much interested in providing a wide number of audiences to
watch the event live, have planned to hold these competitions at three different venues. As per schedule, the 24 hour contest will take place in Llandudno, Up and Down Mountain Race will be observed at Llanberis and the 53km Trail run will be organised in
Anglesey.
For the event to last for three days, a total of 190 athletes hailing from 18 different nations will line-up for the respective individual and team titles.
The inauguration of the championships in North Wales will be marked by the 24-hour Race, on September 23. As per news, there are a number of world-class performers which are expected to turn up for the commonwealth showdown.
In the contest, the Men’s competition is expected to be lead by Jo Blake, the Australian runner. Confronting the silver medal winner of the Keswick 2009 competition will be local athlete, John Pares, who had been an established runner for the event just
about two years ago. The English contingent in the event shall be lead by Christopher Carver. On the Women’s side, it will be English runner, Sharon Gayter who will look defend her title.
Following the 24-hour race will be the up and down mountain race contest, which will be observed in Llanberis on the 24th of this month. As per schedule, the women’s showdown has been planned to kick-off at two in the afternoon, while men’s competition
will open up at 3:30 p.m in the afternoon (as per local time). Some formidable names to mark their presence in the event will be New Zealand’s James Coubrough, Scotland’s Robbie Simpson and Tim Davies. On women’s side, Sarah Tunstall, the English runner, will
strive to bag the title.
Finally, in the 53.75km Train race, a new addition to the commonwealth championships programme, which will mark the concluding day of the event in Anglesey on Sunday, September 25, will observe varied performances by athletes like (men’s) Jason Loutitt,
Paul Fernandez, Allen Smalls, Brendan Davies and Paul Halford.
Prominent women athletes who will strive to stand tall in the contest will be Lucy Colquhoun, Lizzie Hawker, Emma Gooderham, Angela Mudge and Helen Taranowski.
