Commonwealth games: Day three
The Commonwealth Games limped into day three awash with a plethora of medals for all, but particularly who Australia continue their dominance of the competition.
The home nations also continued their fine run including in the tennis with England’s James Ward and Scotland’s Jamie Murray cruising through to the next round easily, while Ross Hutchins Scotland’s other tennis player lost to Wales Josh Milton in straight sets to end his hopes.
In tennis’s slightly more flamboyant cousin, badminton, England’s women were on scintillating form smashing the living daylights out of Mauritius 5-0, as well as taking a 4-1 win over Canada to set up an all British derby in the quarters against Scotland, who destroyed Kenya 5-0. Sadly Wales won’t be joining them, having been eliminated.
The women’s weight-lifting saw the continued rise to prominence of young Zoe Smith who pulled it out the bag with an unexpected bronze medal. At just 16 years of age she has a highly promising future in the sport and is well on course for the Olympics in 2012.
Australia haven’t come to mess around and seem to win basically everything in the pool including Alicia Coutts gold in the women’s 100metre freestyle swimming. They also won a lot of cycling medals including Cameron Meyer‘s victory in the men’s 40km points race.
There was genuine excitement to be found as the athletics got underway, most notably in the men’s 5,000 metres where Moses Kipsiro just about pipped Kenyan former world champion Eliud Kipchoge in a thrilling last straight.
There was a surprise in the boxing as Fred Evens, a great medal hope for Wales, was eliminated early by Joseph St Pierre of Mauritius in cruel fashion as he snatched points late in the last round.
Meanwhile in the bowls Mervyn King and Stuart Airey took Welsh duo Jason Greenslade and Martin Selway to school with a 2-0 route.
In terms of how the hosts are going, everything does finally seem to be built now and attendances are slightly rising so there is a marked improvement there, however the latest thing to be called into disrepute is the pool with many swimmers getting ill and blaming it on

contamination of the water.
That will give you a real case of Delhi belly if nothing else does.
