Question:

Communication Between Continents?

I was wondering how most communication between continents is achieved (mainly as it applies to computer science). Are there wires stretched out across the internet? Do we mainly use satellite links? I know the specifics of the internet and packets and know everything IS networked together, and I know how information gets through the networks. However, how is the network actually put in place when we cross oceans? Sure - here in the USA we can go driving and see telephone lines all over the place and the network is easily placed and visible with huge number of routes possible for information to travel.

Even if wires do cross the ocean, it seems that there would be far fewer routes (as there would only be so many lines running across the ocean - much less than on land I assume) and thus cause issues with speed as the wires would always be occupied.
