What can you do for volunteer and community service hours? I am in NJHS and i would like to get 100 hours of service hours before the end of the school year. I have already earned about 40 hours and have some other things lined up through my church and school but i would like to do some other projects with my family too. I have already looked into habitats for humanity and i will be doing that until March. Do you have any other ideas for other community service?

  1. volunteer to tutor kids or work with an after school program

  2. www.thepencilproject.com

    Easy and rewarding

  3. Charity shops, old people's homes, young children in schools, hospitals if you're allowed to, hospices...erm....(i know you mentioned schools but especially with young children is useful)

Any of those things should be quite easy to set up and quite rewarding.

  4. look into your local First Aid Squad... They usually always need help even if your not on the ambulance itself...and they are usually always willing to give people community service hours for helping...id also look for hospital volunteer work and senior centers

  5. Nursing homes and assisted living facilities have always been my volunteer place of choice. I used to go in an visit with those who were bed-ridden and could not leave their room. Just an hour or 30 minutes chatting with them makes a TREMENDOUS difference in their quality of life. I learned a lot too and found my chats with them fasinating.  If you sing or play an instrument they appreciate that as well. Call your nursing home of choice and speak with the director of volunteer activities.  I'm performing at the end of this month at a nursing home and started a group at church to go perform at local nursing homes and shelters.

  6. ask the local library. you can shelve books or read to children for community service too. of you're 16 or over, you can go and volunteer with animals at the shelter.

  7. Help your elderly neighbours offer to help with their heavy shopping bags. Do some gardening for them.

  8. For the USA: VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org), Change.org (http://www.change.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations. There's also this government sponsored site (http://volunteer.gov/gov/) which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc. Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site (http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/).

If you want to be a volunteer to help with the consequences of a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina, you need to register and prepare NOW. Here's a web site where you can register and start your preparation so that you can help the next time disaster strikes:

  9. Check out volunteermatch.org

It's great!  You can search for different sorts of opportunities, and check out what's happening where you live.
