Antonio Valencia’s expertly taken goal has given Manchester United the lead at half time in the Community Shield at Wembley.
The Ecuadorian winger slotted home from close range just five minutes before the break, following a terrific cross from Wayne Rooney that took out Chelsea’s John Terry and Ashley Cole.
Rooney, Terry and Cole have been roundly booed by opposition fans for their part in England’s dismal World Cup campaign, but memories of the summer were quickly washed away amid a bright start at the national stadium, with Paul Scholes firing over from Valencia’s pinpoint cross.
At the other end, Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka tested Edwin van der Sar with a long range effort, and the veteran Dutchman did well to keep out a fierce header from Branislav Ivanovic, who has also blocked a fierce Park Ji-Sung drive.
