  1. Your community service should not be in a place where there's any danger, so bring your baby with you.  Have the baby in a babypack while working, and nurse as you need to.

Talk to the court people about where the community service takes place.  They should have a variety of possibilities for you to choose from.  If you do 4 hour chunks, it'll be finished in 6 days.

  2. Some museums need folks to sort files, put together newsletters, do back office work, or do data input. They may have the ability to allow you to bring the baby there.

Call your United Way office if you have one and ask what opportunities they have for a person in your situation. Also, the court system typically has recommendations for you.

  3. Nonprofit organizations also have breast-feeding mothers among their staff, and most are prepared to accommodate such among their volunteers. You need to look for administrative tasks you can do privately off by yourself at the organization, like stuffing envelopes. Try these sites to look for such in your area:

    VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org),

    Idealist (http://www.idealist.org),

    Change.org (http://www.change.org)

    CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com)

    Network for Good (http://www.networkforgood.org/)

    ServeNet (http://servenet.org/)

Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site (http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/). All list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations.

Project Gutenberg is always looking for online volunteers to proofread texts which are made freely available to the world. Volunteering for Project Gutenberg is something you can do from your home.

LibriVox is a nonprofit effort that mobilizes volunteers to record chapters of books in the public domain. LibriVox then publishes the audio files on the Internet, via its web site. The goal is to record al books in the public domain! Volunteering for LibriVox is something you can do from your home. You can listen to free audiobooks recorded by volunteers, or volunteer to record yourself reading a chapter of a book in the public domain to share with everyone, by going to the LibriVox web site:
