Im 15 and in grade 9 and I have to have 40 hours of community service by grade 12. What kind of community service is there? I want something easy and fun. When should I do it? Should I do most of it in the summer when I dont have school? Thanks!

  1. Start with something you are intersted in. Let's say you like art, You could volunteer to a museum or help with a children's art project.  Or maybe fashion is it for you, how about Goodwill sorting clothes. OR perhaps you like to read, literacy programs are always looking for folks to teach other to read.  And since it's only 40 hours. And you've got 3 - 3 1/2 years to do this. You could do different things.

Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site,

There's also this government sponsored site, http://volunteer.gov/gov/ which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc.

If you want to be a volunteer to help with the consequences of a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina, you need to register and prepare NOW. Here's a web site where you can register and start your preparation so that you can help the next time disaster strikes:

  5. Community service is not about YOU, it is about helping others in need. So, you should really not be looking for something fun and easy. You need to find a place that can really use the help or talents that you have to give.

There are many places to help at:

    Hospitals

    Homeless shelters

    SPCA

    Schools

    Churches

    Retirement homes

    Food banks

    Soup kitchens

Also during the holidays, there are tons of events that need volunteers (Christmas, Thanksgiving)

You can also check out volunteer opportunities at volunteernatch.org. It will show you all of the places and events that need volunteers.
