  1. Where is your neighborhood? If you are in the USA, any of these web sites can help:

    VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org

    Idealist, http://www.idealist.org

    Change.org, http://www.change.org

    CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com

    Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/

    ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site,

    http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/

There's also this government sponsored site, http://volunteer.gov/gov/ which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc.

Otherwise, snowflake, get your phone book out and start looking for nonprofits in your "neighborhood".

  2. Well it would help if we knew where your neighborhood is :)  Since we don't I'll make some general suggestions.

Ask your pastor or any local pastor where the food ministries in your area are.  They always need helpers to stock shelves, bag food, etc.   Also ask if there is a ministry that helps with auto repairs or with building wheelchair ramps or basic home repairs if you are interested in these things.  You would work with someone who has experience and get to learn a lot.

Boys and Girls club usually needs helpers so may your school system for an after school tutoring or recreation program.

Talk to your local senior center to see what help they need.

Call the animal shelter and offer to do a pet food drive.  The senior center might know senior citizens with little income who need help with food for their pets too.

Shelve books at the local library.  Read stories to little kids there too.

Call your local United Way and ask about their volunteer matching service. Ask your schoolcounselor.  Call a nature group like river keepers and help pick up trash along a river or lake shore.

If finding things on net is hard for you use the yellow pages of the phone book . Look for headings for volunteers, social service, youth, animal rescue, senior citizens services.
