  1. if it's snowing where you are you can always shovel snow for elderly or other residence that need it.

Like said before you can collect with the food bank.

help out at an animal shelter cleaning cages and walking dogs. Or if you like animals but can't get to a shelter offer to walk neighbourhood dogs.

Help tutor younger students with a subject you are doing well in. Volunteer to read to kids at the library  if your library has any after school programs. Call any way even if they have no program if they have a willing volunteer they may let you come in.

If there are any community events on in your area volunteer to help out. You might be able to sell tickets for charity or drop of flyers door to door.

  2. Work in an animal shelter after school. The animals are usually really sweet. But watch out for kitten claws. They hurt. And don't overreact if you get grabbed or nipped by a dog. It may be surprising, but really, it doesn't hurt. You can't do anything with the dog unless it breaks skin.

  3. Call up your local food bank--I'm sure they would love some help stocking, etc.! If you belong to a church, ask if there's anything you can help with--paperwork, filing, cleaning, childcare, etc. Also, try calling some retirement homes--they love to have visitors to chat with and run errands for their residents! Good luck!

  4. VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org), Change.org (http://www.change.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations. There's also this government sponsored site (http://volunteer.gov/gov/) which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc. Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site (http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/).
