i am hoping to go to a college only 20 mins away from my family's house, 11 miles, i am wondering if i should commute or dorm? an allumni my family trusts told me that i should live on campus, because it offers much more, but it is also like $8, 500 and i did the math and traveling to and from with todays rising gas costs it would be about, $3000 or more, added to that is any time my car needs to go to teh shop which wouldnt be much as it is a 2007 model and in good condition, does anyone have any pros or cons of this???

  1. I read the answers and everyone thinks you should live on campus so that you really get to feel that you are part of the college community. That's true and I agree. However, this depends on your personality - are you comfortable being away from your family and being with your peers on a non-stop basis?

I also went away to college and in the end, I returned because I didn't fit in. If you do decide to dorm, please make sure you feel that you fit in with the students who are going there.

My brother also went away to college and returned - there was anti-semitism on campus (we are Jews).

Is it possible to have a good experience at college and live at home - I suppose you would have to make more of an effort and not be in a hurry to get back home.

There is no right and wrong decision - this is an individual decision that has to fit your personality and economic situation. I focused on the psychological aspects because I think that's what is most important.

Good luck and enjoy your college days!

  2. DEFINITELY live on campus. You get the real college feel. you can roll out of bed to class for those 8am bulls**t early classes, come to ure room between classes, roll out of bed to the library or computer site for work, you're in the college environment so u'll be more apt to get ure school work done, its easier to get to and from parties drunk and high off ur ***, u meet alot more friends. Commuters have it terrible, they dont know ne 1 and they dont even feel like theyre goin to college, u might as well just go to a community college.

  3. How's parking at the campus?

It's easy to forget that you can't just drive up to your hall and park right up front.   You and 1000 other students will be scrambling to find a spot in the limited student parking, and end up farther away from the hall than you anticipated with more time spent walking to class.  It's an easy way to blow a lot of time and be late.

It can end up being a big hassle and energy-suck away from actual classes, socializing, etc.

  4. LIVE ON CAMPUS!!!!

You're only in college once, might as well get the full experience.  I don't know what school it is, but at many colleges that are predominantly residential, it's very difficult for commuters to make friends and meet people, and they are also disconnected from campus life.  Live on campus for one year at least, then you can move back home if you want to.
