Commuting via bike in the winter in Portland, OR

We are new to Portland and are wondering if it is still possible to commute to work via bike in the winter. Understand we'll have to deal w/ rain and temps in 30s & 40s. Do a lot of people still ride their bikes in the winter in Portland? Just curious...would be nice to not have to buy a second car for our family especially with the high gas prices.

  1. Yes, people do brave the weather and bike to work in the winter months (well, more like 9 months out of the year!) With public transportation too, you can shorten your ride in the rain and easily jump on the Max light rail or a bus if the weather is really terrible.

I've included some links below to help you decide if you can do without another car. It probably really depends also on how far you have to commute/ride/bus.

  2. it is very hard not to commute by bike in portland. Although we get a lot of rain here it does not get extremely cold. 1000's of people commute year round here and the city is very friendly.
