Former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 director of football, Damien Comolli, has defended the transfer policies during his spell at the Merseyside club.
The 40-year old masterminded Andy Carroll’s 35 million pounds move to Anfield in January 2011from Newcastle United which later became the subject of severe criticism. The English International failed to make any kind of impression since joining the Reds,
firing just 11 goals in his 58 appearances.
Other than that, Comolli also signed http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Stewart-Downing-c34221 for extravagant amounts. Like Carroll, both the players have had an innocuous spell thus far, and currently find themselves at the fringes of the squad, while Carroll was sent out
on loan to West Ham United during the summer.
Comolli’s poor handling of the transfer windows eventually cost him his http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684. Liverpool’s dismal eighth place finish last season forced the owners to fire him and Kenny Dalglish from their respective posts.
Anyhow, the ex director of football has defended the way in which he went about the transfer deals during his stay at Anfield.
He also dispelled the impression that the Reds suffered a massive financial loss under his reign, claiming that the difference in the cost between the players sold and bought was minimal.
“The difference between how much we got for seven players and how much we spent was not big in terms of top-six clubs,” he explained.
“The wage bill went down dramatically, which was what the owners wanted to do… Of course it was a very high fee (£35m) for Andy, which was driven by the very high fee (£50m) for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707.”
The Frenchman also observed that he made a handful of signings during his tenure, meaning that some of them were bound to go wrong. However, he claimed that it was he who brought Luis Suarez to Liverpool who is currently the Reds top performer.
“If you do 26-27 deals in the space of three transfer windows, you are bound to get some wrong – but what do you say about Luis Suarez, he was a big signing?,” he added.
Comolli left the Anfield job in April 2012.
