Companies with Good maternity insurance?

Okay... so my husband has just currently switched to a job that will require us to find our own insurance company. (they will give 200$ measley bucks toward it). Anyway... we have just started shopping and I am amazed that most companies do not typically offer maternity insurance and if they do it is with a outragiously high deductible (like 5000). Anyhow.. I didnt realize that I was so lucky with our work provided plans that paid most of it. I have to sign up now with one that has it available and in my plan-- my husband and I do not use birth control and rely on natural family planning. With that said- we all know that it is harder to guess when we will be pregnant next and i dont want to be stuck with a 'pre-existing condition' and not have it covered. Anyhow.. Anyhow have suggestion on how to get it covered?

  1. First of all, talk to your insurance agent, the one who provides your home insurance and/or life insurance, they usually know about who carries health insurance as well.   When my son was starting out my life insurance agent found a great heath insurance deal for him.

Otherwise, don't expect anything that will cover even close to the whole of the pregnancy.  Most are like dental insurance, covering a percentage -- up to 60% of the cost.

The only good news... the cost of the insurance and any medical bills you rack up for a pregnancy are tax deductible.

Wishing you a happy, healthy pregnancy!

  2. First - once you become pregnant neither you nor your husband will be able to get any insurance policy other than a group policy. None of the companies will insure a pregnant woman nor anyone in the family.

Second, the premium for maternity is outragiously high because only women who or planning on or might get pregnant will buy it. Maternity is a pre-payment plan; no insurance company is going to pay out more for your delivery than it takes in in premium. This is why all plans have a waiting period or a reduced benefit period before you are fully covered. You are generally better off saving the money and paying cash. That being said, insurance is also about piece of mind so if you feel better getting maternity...

Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies to find what options are available for you. Do an analysis of the premium to find out if the maternity option would be cost effective.

Remember, that complications of pregnancy (such as a C-section) are covered with most policies in most states even if you don't have maternity.

  3. Any individual insurance policy, well, the maternity is more of a "prepaid" thing, as the only people that ever buy the maternity coverage, are the ones that plan on using it.

You're not going to find a way to shift most of the cost to an insurance company, unless he switches jobs again, and gets on a group plan with good benefits.  You're on your own, one way or another.

And, FWIW, if you do it right, NFP is EXTREMELY effective.  If you follow the rules.
