Compaq Presario V6000. My computer will not power up. When I hit the power button the lights come

Question

My computer will not power up. When I hit the power button the lights come on briefly then shut off. Sometimes the lights will stay on for several minutes then but it does not boot up. I cannot get it to boot up at all any more.
