Compaq laptop DVD/CD-R problem

I have a HP Compaq Laptop nc6400, 18 months old. The DVD/CD-R player has suddenly stopped working. The eject mechanism is fine.I have no installation disks.Can you please assist?Many thanksAnthony Pearce
