  1. It's hard to know. Only a few companies really make high resolution LCD panels, and a lot of image quality is chalked up to thinks like backlighting and the choice of finishes. See both in a retail setting and decide which you prefer. Also, there are NO Japanese laptops. Companies like Asustek, Lenovo, MSI, Clevo, ECS, and Compal make them, mostly Taiwanese companies, and mostly assembling in China. Nothing Japanese, hasn't been for years, if ever.

Again, the Acer likely uses the same brand panel as the Sony. The companies very well may have laptops built for themselves by the very same Taiwanese companies, and they may very well buy the very same screens for certain models.

  2. Although most screens come from the same company it is also true that they are still designed different and some with better quality.  Screenwise I would say Sony has the best for darker lighting situations and DVDs but the computers are total c**p I had one and it sounded like and airplane taking off due to defective fan which they would replace.  Toshiba is probably the best all around for what you get and great customer service (6 minutes for a service request from start to finish).  Acer is actually one of the largest computer makers in the world believe it or not and they quality is higher than sony I would say.  If the price is close i would go toshiba as they are a great company all around and if you get a model with harmon cardon speakers they sound amazing.
