  1. The League of Nations' main failures was that it lacked the authority to compel member nations to negotiate or obey its resolutions. Most of the powerful nations of the time were not members (the Soviet Union and the United States, mainly) and the ones that were members simply left whenever the LEague tried to intervene in its matters (such as when Fascist Italy invaded Ethiopia or when Hitler broke the Versailles Treaty and annexed surrounding countries). About the only thing that the League did that worked was its Mandate System, in which it administered the former Ottoman Empire territories until they were able to govern themselves.

The United Nations is much more powerful than the League ever was. For one, almost every single country in the world is a member, which automatically grants it more authority to negotiate between member states. the UN Security Council also has the right to use military force to enforce its resolutions, which it has done in certain cases such as its successful intervention against North Korea. It has also been able to conduct massive humanitarian relief efforts in Somalia and the former Socialist Yugoslavia as well as negotiate end disputes in many African nations. Its main failings are its inability to permanently settle longrunning conflicts such as the ones in India-Pakistan and Israel-Palestine. It has also been criticized for being overly bureaucratic and inefficient. Still, it is much more effective than the League ever was.
