  1. Most animals spend most of their life time as diploid (having two complete sets of chromosomes) with only the s*x cells, eggs and sperm, as haploid (having one complete set of chromosomes) cells.

    Most plants exhibit a life cycle in which a diploid stage, the sporophytes alternates with a haploid stage, the gametophyte.  The plants that produce flowers are sporophytes and form spores that are haploid.  The spores grow into haploid stage the gametophytes that produce eggs and sperm.  When the sperm fertilizes the egg, a seed is produced that grows into the sporophyte stage.
