  1. Nixon's policies of engagement were the centerpiece of the Cold War. He escalated things to the point that he frightened the Soviets into the SALT treaties. Eisenhower and Johnson tried diplomacy and side attacks (like Korea and Vietnam which were done to keep the Soviet empire from expanding). Kennedy confronted incursions head on. Ford continued Nixon's strategies, but Carter wimped out. Reagan finally came in and scared the whole Communist bloc into an arms race they couldn't afford. That led to the complete crumbling of the Soviet bloc.
