Running on a road to running on a track? I've basically been training for cross country on a track and would just like to know what running on the road is like, if it easier, so forth.

Also. . . http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiKInRMYFgvgnapfqCZ_H4rsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080723160233AAxaHkp

Thanks.

  1. Mentally:

Running on the roads can be a little more interesting.  Turning left in an oval can get pretty boring when you start cranking up the mileage.  If you are running in a group, road and trail runs are a blast.  Groups also make it easier for cars to see you and they can both push you and slow you so you can hit your desired pace.  Even if you are solo though, road runs give you something to look at and a literal change of scene.  With something to focus on besides lap times and lane lines, the time passes faster.

    Physically:

Pavement can be tougher on the body, but it doesn't have to be.  Poor surface and improper/old shoes can wreak havoc on your joints and muscles.  If you are going to do road runs, try to include alternate days where you get off the pavement somewhat.  Also existing are the very real dangers of pot-holes, uneven sidewalks, loose gravel, broken glass, puddles, cars, bikes, buses, trains, etc.  Be visible and be aware of what's around you and in your path.  With that said, the distance runners of my college team ran 5 days a week on city streets, sidewalks, and paved bike paths.  With proper replacement of shoes after 450-600 miles they were able to train just fine without any major injuries.

    Speedwise:

Road speed and track speed are not all that different when it comes to training purposes, assuming no hills.  Both can be flat and equally curvy.  Both are going to be faster than running medium to long grass or any grass/dirt that is wet.

Give road running a shot.  I like it.  Millions of others like it.  Change your shoes when needed and know your body well enough to know if you need to switch to less intense training.

    Good Luck

  2. road running is much harder on ur bones because u feel the impact on ur shins and knees

the track absorbs this impact much better

but for cross country u should run mostly in dirt or grass

    road occasionally but not daily

    good luck

  3. ill never every run on a track...ever!!

its the most boring thing and i totally see how people get burnt out. road running is awesome...

i trained with a marathon training group and we start on a park loop and end up running all over the city. there is no comparison.  u must totally love being out doors and feeling free.  i don't even think i ran cross country in high school on a track once.  its all road work..that's the fun part about it.

i wouldn't say it was easier but the fact that u have so many things to see... u don't think about it as much..or u don't have to worry bout counting laps.

u can map out ur run, enjoy the run and zone out (do be careful with the cars tho... alot of people are not courteous to runners)
