  1. There are parallels, both have:

long hot summers (though one has more showers during these summers than the other)

mountainous regions in which you could hide for months

    significant impact on world history

their largest city is not particularly well tailored for tourism

more Americans wandering around than the locals would probably choose to have

...but the most striking similarity is that both have been under long-term occupation,  and both are, in their own way, rebelling with some degree of success against it.

  2. LOL!

Apart from the fact that the Scots originally migrated from the general area which is now Afghanistan and the "North West Frontier" region, I doubt there is any comparison.

(I love reminding my Scots wife of this historical fact!)

  3. One is a mountainous, but very beautiful, country, with many great traditions, unique and charming national dress, a love of knife-carrying, and a rich cultural heritage, but which is sadly prone to intense violence and tribalism, and an intense hatred of the English, even beyond what might be regarded as understandable given the historic context  The largest city has a particularly bloody and sectarian history, and had some of its most charming quarters devastated, first by war, and then by post-war planning.

I imagine it's rather hard to buy Buckfast tonic wine (or a decent single malt whisky) in the other country.
