  1. Rome was "old money," and its major industries were the Church and other traditional businesses of the time.  Its architecture was "classical" older-style.

    Florence was the "new money," and many of the newer artists lived there and worked there.  It had a newer architecture and it was the center of trade for Europe during the early Renaissance.
